Vicar Apostolic of Jaffna & First Archbishop of Colombo
Province necrology · Register no. 37
From the Province register of Oblates who served in Ceylon and Jaffna. Dates are written day, month, year.
Archbishop Ernest Christopher Bonjean, O.M.I., stands as one of the most visionary prelates in the history of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka. Having arrived in Ceylon in 1856, he succeeded Bishop Stephen Semeria as Vicar Apostolic of Jaffna in 1868 and was subsequently elevated as the first Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Colombo in 1886. Archbishop Bonjean is revered as the father and chief architect of the Catholic denominational education system in Sri Lanka. Facing severe opposition from colonial educational policies, he forcefully advocated for state-assisted denominational schools that preserved religious identity while delivering high academic standards in both native vernacular languages (Tamil and Sinhala) and English. In addition to his educational crusade, Archbishop Bonjean recognized the crucial role of Catholic journalism. He founded 'The Catholic Messenger' in Colombo and the 'Jaffna Catholic Guardian', establishing a powerful press apostolate to defend Catholic rights and promote literacy. He also laid the foundation stone for the magnificent St. Lucia's Cathedral in Kotahena, Colombo, and established St. Bernard's Major Seminary to foster native priestly vocations.
