Amathi Karankal: Wellness Centre for Amputees, Mankulam
The Amathi Karankal – LEBARA Wellness Centre for Amputees, located at Panikankulam, Mankulam, Mullaitivu, was inaugurated in May 2014 as a humanitarian ministry dedicated to restoring hope, dignity, and independence to persons with amputations and disabilities, particularly those affected by the civil conflict. Fr. S. Anpurasa, OMI, served as its first Director.
The Centre is a collaborative initiative of the LEBARA Foundation, Meththa Foundation, Missio Aachen, Porticus, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and generous benefactors. It provides holistic care addressing the physical, psychological, economic, spiritual, and educational needs of amputees and their families.
A major service of the Centre is the provision of artificial limbs and orthotic devices free of charge, helping beneficiaries regain mobility and confidence. The Centre also offers counselling, psychosocial support, and motivational programmes to assist individuals in overcoming trauma and rebuilding their lives.
In addition, beneficiaries receive livelihood assistance for self-employment, small businesses, and cottage industries. Educational grants are also provided to children from amputee families and to school-going amputees, enabling them to continue their education.
Through these services, Amathi Karankal continues the Oblate mission of accompanying the vulnerable, restoring dignity, and helping individuals and families build more secure and hopeful futures.
