HAVONOS: Empowering Communities through Hope and Sustainable Development
HAVONOS - OMI, supported by HAVONOS–Netherlands, is an Oblate social-development initiative serving vulnerable communities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. Currently coordinated by Fr. S. R. Satheeskumar, OMI, it responds to the needs of war-affected families, women, children, youth, and marginalized communities through education, livelihood development, psychosocial support, youth empowerment, and rehabilitation.
A major initiative is the FAITH (Food Always in the Home) programme, which supports women-headed families through livelihood projects, agriculture, home gardening, counselling, and women's groups. More than 775 women have benefited from these programmes.
Education is another major focus. Through initiatives such as the SieCo Centre, Amathikalam Community Development Centre, and Sieni Fund for Children's Education, disadvantaged children receive scholarships, school supplies, nutritious meals, and educational support.
The Nesakkarankal Farm at Iyakachchi promotes sustainable livelihoods through coconut cultivation, goat and poultry farming, brick-making, and other agricultural activities, while also supporting local students through scholarships and educational programmes.
HAVONOS also collaborates with the Esther Rehabilitation Centre in Batticaloa in providing rehabilitation services for people affected by drug addiction and conducting prevention programmes in schools and villages.
Through these diverse ministries, OMI and HAVONOS continue to promote education, psychosocial well-being, sustainable livelihoods, rehabilitation, and social justice, helping vulnerable communities build lives of greater dignity, resilience, hope, and peace.
