Vasanthaham — De Mazenod Scholasticate
Forming Oblate Missionaries for Priesthood and Brotherhood
Vasanthaham, De Mazenod Scholasticate, Colombuthurai, is an important stage in the ongoing formation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). It accompanies Oblate scholastics as they prepare for their future vocation to the priesthood or brotherhood, helping them grow in spiritual depth, intellectual understanding, human maturity and missionary commitment.
Rooted in the spirituality and charism of St. Eugene de Mazenod, the Scholasticate seeks to form men who are deeply united with Jesus Christ, committed to the Church and ready to serve the poor and most abandoned. Formation at this stage integrates academic studies, prayer, community life, pastoral experience and personal discernment, preparing candidates to live their Oblate vocation with dedication and generosity.
Intellectual Formation: Philosophy and Theology
Intellectual formation plays a vital role in preparing scholastics for their future ministry. Through studies in philosophy and theology, they deepen their understanding of human life, Christian faith, Sacred Scripture, Church teachings and the mission of the Church in the contemporary world.
These studies help them develop critical thinking, sound judgement and the ability to engage thoughtfully with the challenges faced by individuals and communities. For those preparing for the priesthood, theological studies provide an essential foundation for preaching, sacramental ministry and pastoral leadership. Those preparing for brotherhood are likewise encouraged to develop the knowledge, skills and spiritual maturity needed for their particular areas of missionary service.
Spiritual Formation and Oblate Identity
Spiritual formation remains at the heart of life at the Scholasticate. Through daily prayer, meditation, the celebration of the Eucharist, spiritual reading, retreats and spiritual guidance, scholastics are encouraged to deepen their relationship with Christ and grow in holiness.
They continue to discover the richness of the Oblate charism, learning from the life and mission of St. Eugene de Mazenod. His passion for Christ and his commitment to evangelising the poor inspire them to become missionaries who bring hope, compassion and reconciliation to the people they serve.
Pastoral Experience and Missionary Service
Pastoral experience connects academic learning and spiritual formation with the real needs of people. Through pastoral placements and ministry in parishes and other apostolic settings, scholastics encounter the joys and struggles of local communities and learn to respond with sensitivity, humility and compassion.
These experiences help them develop practical skills in pastoral care, evangelisation, preaching, community engagement and accompanying people through different stages of life. They also deepen their understanding of the Church's mission and strengthen their readiness to serve people who are poor, vulnerable or marginalised.
Regency: Learning Through Mission
Regency is an important period of practical and apostolic experience in the formation journey. During this stage, scholastics are given opportunities to participate more directly in the life and mission of the Oblates, often through service in a community or apostolic setting.
By engaging in pastoral work, education, social ministry and other missionary activities, they learn to translate the values of religious life into concrete action. Regency encourages responsibility, initiative, perseverance and a deeper understanding of the realities of the people. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on personal growth and to integrate lived experience with ongoing vocational discernment.
Community Life and Fraternity
Community life is an essential dimension of formation at Vasanthaham. Living, praying, studying and sharing responsibilities together helps scholastics develop fraternity, mutual respect, cooperation and a spirit of service.
Through shared prayer, community meetings, meals, recreation and daily responsibilities, they learn to appreciate individual differences, resolve challenges constructively and support one another in their vocational journey. This experience prepares them to live and work collaboratively in Oblate communities and in the wider Church.
Preparing for a Lifelong Mission
Formation at De Mazenod Scholasticate is not limited to academic qualifications or preparation for a particular ministry. It is a continuing process of becoming mature, prayerful, compassionate and committed Oblate missionaries.
By integrating intellectual, spiritual, human, pastoral and community formation, Vasanthaham accompanies scholastics as they prepare for the responsibilities of priesthood or brotherhood and discern how best to offer their gifts in the service of God and humanity.
Vasanthaham — De Mazenod Scholasticate, Colombuthurai, forms future Oblate priests and brothers to live the Gospel with conviction, serve the poor with compassion and carry forward the missionary spirit of St. Eugene de Mazenod.
