Pre-Novitiate — Gnanodhayam
Discovering the Oblate Charism and Preparing for Religious Life
The Pre-Novitiate at Gnanodhayam, Keeri, is an important stage in the formation journey of young men discerning a vocation to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI). It provides an opportunity to deepen their understanding of religious life, discover the identity and mission of the Oblate congregation, and prepare themselves spiritually, personally and communally for the Novitiate.
Discovering Our Congregation and Charism
During the Pre-Novitiate, candidates learn about the history, identity, spirituality and missionary commitments of the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. They explore the life and vision of St. Eugene de Mazenod, the founder of the congregation, whose love for Jesus Christ, devotion to the Church and commitment to the poor continue to inspire Oblate missionaries throughout the world.
Through formation sessions, prayer, reflection and study, candidates come to appreciate the distinctive Oblate charism: proclaiming the Gospel, especially among the poor and most abandoned, and accompanying people with compassion, solidarity and hope.
Spiritual and Human Formation
Spiritual formation encourages candidates to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through personal prayer, meditation, the celebration of the Eucharist, reflection on Sacred Scripture and spiritual guidance. They are invited to cultivate a life rooted in faith, humility, discernment and service.
Human formation focuses on self-awareness, emotional maturity, personal responsibility, healthy relationships, discipline and the ability to live authentically with others. Candidates are encouraged to recognise their strengths and limitations and to grow into mature, responsible and compassionate individuals.
Community Life and Interculturality
Community living is an essential part of the Oblate formation journey. Candidates learn to live together in fraternity, share responsibilities, respect differences and support one another in their personal and spiritual growth.
Intercultural formation helps them appreciate and respect the richness of different cultures, languages, traditions and experiences. By learning to listen, communicate openly and live harmoniously with people from diverse backgrounds, candidates develop the attitudes needed to serve in a multicultural Church and an international missionary congregation.
This experience nurtures mutual understanding, openness, unity and respect, enabling future Oblate missionaries to build bridges among communities and work collaboratively across cultural boundaries.
Learning the Missionary Spirit
The Pre-Novitiate introduces candidates to the apostolic and missionary spirit of the Oblates. They learn about the congregation's commitment to evangelisation, pastoral ministry, service to vulnerable people, justice, peace and reconciliation.
Through reflection and appropriate pastoral exposure, candidates begin to understand that religious life is not simply a personal spiritual journey but a lifelong commitment to God and to the service of others, especially those who are poor, neglected or marginalised.
Preparing for the Novitiate
The Pre-Novitiate prepares candidates for the next stage of formation: the Novitiate. During this period, they are encouraged to deepen their vocational discernment, strengthen their prayer life, develop a clearer understanding of the vows and responsibilities of religious life, and become more familiar with the spirituality and traditions of the Oblates.
With the guidance of formators and through personal reflection, candidates are invited to discern their vocation freely and responsibly, growing in readiness for a deeper commitment to Christ and the missionary life of the congregation.
Forming Missionaries for the Future
Gnanodhayam, Keeri, offers a space for discovery, growth and discernment, where candidates can explore their vocation and build a strong foundation for the journey ahead. Through spiritual guidance, human development, intercultural living and an understanding of the Oblate charism, the Pre-Novitiate helps prepare them for the challenges and blessings of religious and missionary life.
The goal of the Pre-Novitiate is to help each candidate grow in faith, maturity, fraternity and missionary awareness, preparing him to enter the Novitiate with a deeper understanding of the Oblate vocation and a generous heart ready to serve the people of God.
